Industry challenge the workforce of the future
Liverpool Community College worked with local schools and large employers recently to raise awareness of careers in Construction and the Arts.
On 4th November, eight schools from across the city took part in taster courses at the college’s Vauxhall Road site to raise awareness of the new Diploma in Construction. The event was backed by industry giants Balfour Kilpatrick, Vinci and Morgan Ashurst who provided master classes in subjects from project management to brickwork.
A similar event took place at the Liverpool Empire theatre on 5th November offering a series of workshops for 13 and 14 year olds. Offstage Choices° gave young people a taste of the jobs available behind the scenes in technical theatre and live music events.
The pupils got the chance to meet professionals in lighting, sound technicians, stage managers, marketing and front of house staff, who shared their tricks of the trade and experiences of working out of the spotlight.
College principal, Maureen Mellor MBE, said: ‘The support from industry showed commitment to producing local talent. Liverpool needs skilled people and with the support of these large employers we aim to raise awareness and the expectations of local teenagers.
‘The College is committed to providing further education and creative careers choices to the next generation of skilled workers in the arts and construction industries.’
