College of the future

School pupils made their mark by launching the city’s ‘college of the future’.  Amongst the pupils were two year 2 pupils from Blackmoor primary school who broke the ground for Liverpool Community College’s new build on Roscoe Street on Wednesday 21 October.

The £35 million development, supported with Learning and Skills Council funding, will ensure that Liverpool has one the best equipped further education colleges in the country. The new building is to be handed over to Liverpool Community College in April 2011.

The futuristic four storey building will enhance the college’s city centre campus by providing state-of-the-art technology for its 20,000 students.  Situated between established sites the new building will be a hub for staff and students providing sport facilities and learning resources.

The new site will increase the college’s capacity to meet growing student numbers and develop the skills required by employers in a global economy.

Maureen Mellor MBE , principal said: "The new building marks a new chapter in the college’s history.  We are delighted that primary school pupils have performed the groundbreaking ceremony.  When they are considering options after leaving school they will have access to the best further education resources in the country.  This new development will help us continue to deliver an outstanding service by embracing the most up to date technology for teaching and learning."
