What is Counselling?
We recognise that it can be hard to ask for help and make that initial contact. If you have not had counselling before you may be curious about what happens.
Counselling is an opportunity for you to talk about or explore something in confidence that is causing you anxiety or distress.
You may want a few or several appointments to do this. All College Counsellors are qualified and can tell you more about this if you ask.
It’s always easier to talk about difficulties sooner rather than later, before things get worse. Difficulties can be about anything at all, eg relationships, bullying, anxiety, stress, grief.

Is It The Right Thing for Me?
If you chose to make contact with the Counselling Service, an initial appointment will be made. This will be a time for getting some clarity in what you want to change, information gathering and answering any questions you may have. Together with the counsellor you will decide if counselling is appropriate and how the service will be able to meet your needs. Many people find this helpful in itself and decide not to start a counselling arrangement. Sometimes your needs may be better met by an external source and a referral will be suggested.
If you chose to begin counselling it is important that you feel safe and comfortable with the counselling relationship. Please discuss any concerns with your counsellor first. An alternate counsellor may be better for you, and this can be arranged.
