Additional Student Support

Tutorials:
Tutorials are an important component of your course.  If you are on a programme of 450 hours or more per year you will be allocated a personal tutor who will meet you in a weekly group tutorial and in regular individual tutorials.  Your personal tutor will have an overview of your progress in college and will support you throughout your course.  Many important aspects of college life such as help with study skills and making applications to employers or universities are dealt with in the tutorial and your tutor will be responsible for writing references for you.

All part-time students will have access to a personal tutor who is there to help you make the most of your time in college and will assist you in accessing college services.

Sexual Health Advisor:
The college’s Student Sexual Health Advisor is available to offer help and advice on all aspects of Sexual Health.

The Sexual Health Adviser takes group tutorials to develop awareness of different relationships and sexuality, to inform students of what safe sex is and where to gain accurate information and support. The sessions aim to be very interactive and students will be actively involved in their own learning around the subject of sexual health.  This is achieved through group discussions, games and short videos.  It is important to raise students’ awareness about this important subject by offering help and advice within college.

  • There has been an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and a high rate of abortions
  • In England in 2003 57.2% of conception was in people under 16s and 46% of conceptions in 16-17 year olds ended in termination

Support could include:

  • One to one advice
  • Referral to other agencies
  • Group tutorials based on Sexual Health
  • Support with Self Esteem issues and referral to college counselling team
  • Guidance and staff development on the subject of Sexual Health
  • Support for all students regardless of age, disability, race or gender

CounsellingThe college recognises that it can be hard to ask for help and if students have never had counselling they may be curious about what is involved.  There is a College Counselling intranet web pages with details of the service and links to other agencies that could help.

  • Counselling is an opportunity for students to talk about or explore something in confidence that is causing anxiety or distress
  • This may involve a few or several appointments
  • All College Counsellors are qualified and discuss the approach that the student feels would help most if they ask
  • It is always easier to talk about difficulties sooner rather than later, before things get worse
  • Difficulties can be about anything at all, e.g. relationships, bullying, anxiety, stress, grief

Contact:
Students can contact the counselling team direct by telephone or email, and a tutor or Student Services staff can also arrange an appointment
