What is the Adult Learning Grant (A.L.G)?
If you are eligible you can get up to £30 a week to help pay for things like travel, books and materials.
To get A.L.G you have to be;
- 19 or older
- Studying at least 12 hours a week and attending college regularly
- Doing your first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification (includes BTEC, NVQ, GCSE and A Level)
- Earning less than £19,513 if you are single, or less than £30,810 if you are a couple
If you are working part-time or are living at home, you could still get A.L.G. How much you get will depend on your income and benefits.
If you are entitled, you will receieve your A.L.G payment each week of your course as soon as you achieve 100% attendance from that week.
To see if you are entitled to A.L.G or how to apply, go to www.direct.gov.uk/ALG
You can also call the A.L.G Helpline on 0800 121 8989.
You can also obtain an application from a Student Services unit or from an A.L.G officer located in any one of the main centres;

What to do when you arrive at the college
The first thing you must do is complete your enrolment on an eligible course. An eligible course is one leading to a first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification. College staff will help you to know whether you are eligible or not.
The A.L.G officer will then help you complete your A.L.G learner agreement. Once completed, the A.L.G officer will sign and stamp the learning agreement, return it to you, and retain a copy for our records.
You must return your completed A.L.G learner agreement as soon as possible to the A.L.G payment body, otherwise any A.L.G payments to which you are entitled may be delayed.
