How can I encourage student participation in my VLE course area?

Initially when designing and planning your VLE course area it is important to think about how you will keep students coming back after they have made their first visit.

Like any website, your VLE course area needs to provide a reason for students to revisit. Although it is important to keep updating and adding to your course page whenever you can, there may come a time where you feel there is no more relevent content that you can add. At this point it is worth considering if it will be possible to stagger the appearence of the content on your course page by making use of the Hide/Show option next to each resource and activity link. One option is for you to hide content at the start of the year and then reveal relevant content throughout the year as your course progresses.

Another thing to remember is that students may find it helpful if you provide additional help and information for homework assignments within your VLE course page. This could be in the form of links to relevant websites, examples and additional reading etc.

In addition to adding content, there are interactive resources and activities that can be integrated into your scheme of work and classroom teaching.

Some examples…

It may be possible to use forums for students to collaborate with each other (or in distinct groups) or reflect on their own and each other’s work, also the Glossary can be used as an activity for students to add definitions to existing terms, add terms to existing definitions, or add completely new entries.

There is no set way in which you should use the VLE as part of your teaching, however do try to think about how you can use the online resources in much the same way you would any other resource in the college.
